As students return to Bunclody Community College for the new school year, we are introducing a new approach to managing mobile phones during the school day. Students will be provided with a secure, combination-locked phone case attached to their locker. At the beginning of the school day, students will place their mobile phone inside the case, lock it and leave it securely stored until the end of the school day, or when required.
The decision comes at a time when the impact of smartphones and social media on young people is receiving increasing attention. This week, Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, is facing a major trial in the United States in which 29 states allege that its platforms were deliberately designed to encourage prolonged use among young people and that the company failed to adequately address risks to children. Meta strongly disputes these allegations.

At the same time, there is growing international research into the relationship between digital device use and learning. The OECD has reported a negative association between recreational digital device use in school and academic performance, while UNESCO has highlighted evidence that smartphones can distract students from learning. Even the presence of a phone and incoming notifications can interrupt attention, with research suggesting that students may take significant time to refocus on a task after being distracted.
The issue is not about being opposed to technology. Digital technology is an important part of modern education and, when used appropriately, can be an extremely valuable learning tool. Rather, the aim is to ensure that personal devices do not compete with teachers, classmates and learning for students' attention during lessons.
There is also a growing international movement towards reducing the use of smartphones in schools. UNESCO reported earlier this year that 114 education systems around the world now have national restrictions on mobile phones in schools!

At Bunclody Community College, the introduction of the lockable phone cases is intended to make this approach straightforward and consistent. Rather than students having to resist the temptation to check messages, social media, notifications or other apps during the school day, the phone will simply be out of reach and out of sight, yet available when required.
We hope that this will bring a number of benefits for our students, including greater concentration in lessons, fewer distractions, improved face-to-face interaction, and a calmer learning environment. It may also help students to develop healthier habits around technology by creating a clear distinction between time for learning and time for personal screen use.
The school recognises that phones are an important part of modern family life and that parents and students may occasionally need to communicate during the school day. Appropriate arrangements will remain in place for contacting students where necessary, and the school will continue to use digital technology where it genuinely supports teaching and learning.
This is not about removing technology from students' lives. It is about helping them to use it appropriately — and ensuring that, during the school day, they are truly present.
