Celebrating World Book Day at Bunclody Community College

At Bunclody Community College, we believe that books have the power to inspire, connect and transport us to new worlds. This year, to celebrate World Book Day, our school community came together for a full week of imaginative and engaging activities that highlighted the joy of reading for everyone.

Here’s a look back at our fantastic week!

Monday – Starbooks Café & “Guess Who Came to Tea?”

We kicked off the celebrations with our much-loved Starbooks Café. A classroom was transformed into a cosy coffee-shop style reading space where students could relax, enjoy a warm drink, and immerse themselves in a good book. The atmosphere was buzzing with conversation about favourite authors, genres and new recommendations.

Alongside this, students took part in our “Guess Who Came to Tea?” activity. Clues were displayed around the school about a mystery literary character who had “visited” for tea. Students had to piece together the hints to correctly identify the surprise guest. It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic detectives at work!

Tuesday – Literary Map Trail

On Tuesday, students set off on a Literary Map Trail around the school. Different locations featured clues, quotes and references to well-known books and authors. Participants followed the trail, answering questions and uncovering literary connections as they went.

This interactive activity encouraged teamwork, problem-solving and, of course, plenty of discussion about books. It certainly added an adventurous twist to our reading celebrations!

Wednesday – Guess the Teacher Hidden Behind the Book

Wednesday brought lots of laughter with our “Guess the Teacher Hidden Behind the Book” challenge. Photos of teachers were displayed, but their faces were hidden behind the covers of their favourite books. Students had to match the book (and a few helpful clues!) to the correct staff member.

This activity sparked great conversations about what teachers like to read and helped students discover new book recommendations along the way.

Thursday – Book Club: Book & a Biscuit

Thursday’s celebration was a cosy and welcoming Book & a Biscuit session during Book Club. Members gathered to chat about what they’re currently reading, share recommendations, and enjoy a biscuit (or two!) in a relaxed setting.

It was a lovely opportunity for students to connect over shared interests and celebrate the simple pleasure of reading together.

Friday – World Book Day Table Quiz

We rounded off the week with an exciting World Book Day Table Quiz. Teams competed in rounds covering classic literature, contemporary fiction, famous authors, book-to-film adaptations and more.

The quiz brought out everyone’s competitive spirit and showcased the incredible range of reading knowledge within our school community. Congratulations to all who took part!

A Week to Remember

Our World Book Day celebrations were a wonderful reminder that reading is for everyone. Whether solving clues, sharing book recommendations, or competing in the quiz, students and staff alike embraced the spirit of the week.

A huge thank you to everyone who organised, participated in and supported the events. We are already looking forward to next year’s celebrations at Bunclody Community College!

Happy reading!
